Jennie Thomas Stultz is a native Gastonian. She and her husband, David, have one daughter, Amy McHenry. Amy and her husband, Jim, have two children: Mary – age 16 and Mac – age 14.

Education

  • 1965 Graduate of Ashley High School, Gastonia

  • Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education, Gaston College
  • 2002- Harvard- JFK School of Government for Local and State Officials

1970-1987 Organized and operated public and private pre-school programs in Gastonia

1987-1997 Directed Gastonia Clean City, Inc.- Keep America Beautiful program

  • Developed programs for recycling, litter abatement, beautification
  • Formed public/private partnership to enhance Gastonia!&s aesthetics
  • Acquired over $1.3 million in benefits through grants, volunteer hours and in-kind services, winning 10 national 4 state and 3 local awards for program excellence

1995-1997 Community Relations Director for the City of Gastonia

  • Directed Gastonia's Sister City Program
  • Organized economic, educational and cultural exchanges to Germany
  • Headed 1997 All-America City effort
  • Served as city liaison to Mayor Garland's Uptown Revitalization Committee

1998 - 2005 National Consultant for Keep America Beautiful, Inc.

2005- Partnered in founding Leading by Design, Inc., a consultation and facilitation business specializing in assisting local governments and non profits in setting priorities, board development, and outcome based programming and sustainability. She presently has contracts with Gaston County Schools and Keep America Beautiful, Inc.


Elected the first female mayor of Gastonia
in November 1999 and is serving her fifth term.

  • 2005 - Gaston Literacy Council, Past Chair
  • 2005 - Gastonia East Rotary Club- Paul Harris Fellow
  • 2005-07 - Schiele Museum Board of Advisors
  • 2005 - Trustee and Adult Sunday School Teacher. First United Methodist Church
  • 2005-Present - Gastonia Downtown Development Board of Directors
  • 2005 - Serves on 2012 Strategic Council and Collaberative Partners
  • 2004 - NC TASH Community Advocate Award for programs & support of disabled and homeless persons
  • 2003, 04, 05 - Honorary Chair - Girl Scouts of Pioneer Council Annual Golf Tournament
  • 1997-2003 - Trustee - Carrie E. and Lena V. Glenn Foundation
  • 2002 - Established Gastonia!&s first Mayor's Youth Council

  • 2000 - Gastonia Civitans "Citizen of the Year"
